There is a ton of Lightroom news today, and I have around 9 posts and 9 videos covering it. If you’re confused about where to start with and you want to make sure you don’t miss anything, please visit my What’s New in Lightroom Classic and Lightroom CC resource page. You’ll find a summary article and then sections on what’s new in Lightroom (Classic 7), what is the cloud-based Lightroom CC, how to make a decision on which to use, and what’s new in Lightroom mobile and web.
I hope you enjoy the content!
I realize you don’t work for Adobe (do you?) but this all very confusing! It seems a bit contradictory that you say standalone is no more but there is a version 7 which will be subscription based and a LR CC that is also subscription based and a LR web. I recently, at your suggestion, moved from my standalone version 6 to LR/PS CC with android mobile (which came with other stuff I don’t understand). So, is what I am now subscribed to considered LR Classic, LRCC or LR Cloud based? It sounds like I should of waited even longer to make the switch!
I am really, really upset because I asked repeatedly if LR standalone was going away and although you say it is there is going to be a LR7 which based on your description will be installed on the desktop and I presume will not have cloud based features but will get free upgrades as long as the subscription remains active much like MS Office’s subscription, which by the way, I advocated for in a response to your blog about why I should move to LRCC! So it sounds to me like LR7 is standalone but not purchased as standalone.
At the risk of redundancy this is very, very, very confusing and it seems all you paid influencers (no offense) are trying to put a positive Adobe spin on the situation
Hi George, I don’t work for Adobe and I’m not a paid influencer. I agree that it’s confusing, and I state this elsewhere. All I can do is try to make it clear for users (free of charge), and my fault if I haven’t, though Adobe’s choice of naming them “Lightroom CC” and “Lightroom Classic” are partially at fault as well. I’ll revisit my explanations to make them more clear.
You can continue with the Creative Cloud Photography program at $10/month and use Lightroom Classic 7. This is the same program you have been using, except with performance improvements, range mask and embedded previews. You will still have the ability to sync collections to your mobile devices and the web, and to sync from mobile devices and the web to Classic 7 – nothing changes (but don’t use the new keywording and folders functionality on mobile – those won’t sync to Classic 7.)
You can ignore the new cloud-based “Lightroom CC” program that you’ll see is also available to install from your Creative Cloud application.
I understand your frustration and I can definitely empathize with that. At the same time, I didn’t write a “Why you should move to LR CC” article – I wrote an article comparing Lightroom CC to Lightroom 6, and left it to readers to decide which would work better for them.
Please join me in my webinar on Saturday where I’ll be covering all of this. You’ll find it on the Webinars tab here on my website.
Thank you very much for a very helpful video on installing Lightroom Classic! I would encourage anyone installing the upgrade to watch this video first and make some notes. The process makes sense once you complete it, but if you just hit the update button some grief is going to follow you. I watched the video first and then replayed it on my iPad as I was making the changes to my desktop system.
I hope that the naming process for LR standardizes soon It will lessen the confusion Thanks again for a very helpful article. You are my go to source before installing LR updates.
I am a tad confused. I am using Lightroom Classic 7 which updated just fine. I wanted to try out Lightroom CC. So I imported photos from my Lightroom Classic folders i.e users/anthony/pictures/2017/New England. These imported into the new CC and I have my New England photos visible in both Classic and new CC. Now what happens? If I want to delete them from new CC do I delete the photos from my Classic folder, and thus delete the photos from everywhere? Or does deleting in new CC NOT affect the photos in Lightroom Classic? (If not why not).
Desperate for an answer
Regards Tony UK
I’ll get to this topic sometime soon, but not this weekend. In the meantime, you just have smart previews of your Classic synced collections in Lightroom CC. You can delete them if you want to, but turn sync off in Classic or they will just come right back in. Don’t delete from Classic – that would delete them from Classic, LR CC and everywhere.
