Adobe this morning released Lightroom 6.3 (and CC 2015.3 for subscribers – referred to as 6.3 in this article). In addition to the typical new camera support, lens profiles, tethering support and bug fixes, Lightroom 6.3 has reverted to the import dialog that we had up through Lightroom 6.1.1. In 6.2 released October 5, Adobe introduced a redesigned import process, but the uproar over removed features and stability issues led Adobe to reverse course. While we all would have preferred to not have gone through the tumultuous 6.2 experience, I appreciate that Adobe listened to user feedback, issued an apology, and quickly changed course.
If you need to learn how to use this reintroduced import dialog, watch my quick basic video on importing over at Adobe.com, or my comprehensive import videos (recorded with Lightroom 5, but still applicable.)
Updating to 6.3
With 6.3, I don’t have any indication that there will be any major issues, and I myself have updated. Nevertheless, if you don’t need these changes right away, it can’t hurt to see how the update goes for early adapters. I will update this post if there are widespread serious issues – no news is good news. Before updating, it is always a good idea to back up your Lightroom catalog.
If you didn’t update to 6.2 and are updating to 6.3 on the day of release (November 17), you need to be careful that you don’t accidentally get a 6.2 update (i.e. if the 6.3 update isn’t yet available to you through Lightroom or your CC app.) For the guaranteed Lightroom 6.3 update, download the file directly from here: Windows Mac. Then go into your Downloads folder (or where you chose to download it to), and double-click on the file to run the update.
If you are updating after November 17, you can update through Lightroom – if Lightroom doesn’t prompt you to update, go to Help>Updates (or Help>Check for Updates).
After updating, if you click on the Import button in the Library module and get a big “Add Photos” screen, you have 6.2, not 6.3. Download and run the 6.3 update from the link above.
Issues or Feedback?
If you experience issues with 6.3 or have feedback, Adobe would like to hear from you on feedback.photoshop.com.
New Camera Support
Lightroom will now import files from the following new cameras: Canon EOS M10, Canon PowerShot G5 X, Canon PowerShot G9 X, Fujifilm X-T1 IR, Leica SL (Typ 601), Sony RX1R II (DSC-RX1RM2). Click here for a list of all cameras supported in Lightroom 6 (and other Lightroom versions. The title says Camera Raw, but the righthand column shows Lightroom support.)
New Tethering Support
Lightroom will now allow you to shoot tethered with the following additional cameras: Canon EOS 5DS, Canon EOS 5DS R, Canon EOS T6i / 750D, Canon EOS T6s / 760D. With your camera connected to your computer via USB, you can automatically import photos into Lightroom as you shoot. Click here for a list of all cameras supported for tethered capture.
Bug Fixes
Here is a list of fixed bugs, from Adobe:
Fixed several instability, functionality and performance issues introduced in Lightroom CC 2015.2.x/6.2.x.
Fixed several bugs related to Panorama Merge.
Fixed bugs that:
- caused edits made and saved in Photoshop or 3rd party plug-ins to not appear in the Develop module.
- caused user default for Chromatic Aberration Correction to not be honored after new Import option was removed.
- prevented rotated photos from showing as rotated when in Full Screen view.
- caused a performance slowdown when creating Standard sized previews on high resolution monitors.
- caused image previews to be incorrectly displayed as completely black after import if “Auto Tone” is on in preferences.
- caused crash when using the Radial or Graduated Filter.
- caused Palette, a 3rd party hardware device, to stop working with Lightroom.
- caused the Map module to appear pixelated and photos to be dropped in the wrong place when using hi-dpi monitors on Windows.
- prevented you from exiting Full Screen view while using the Spot Healing Tool.
- caused the Flickr Publish Service to improperly publish multi-word keywords.

thanks for posting Laura, fingers crossed this one works, after all the hassle last time (well the time before last) it should do.
Only problem I can see is that with all the new lens supported, I’m going to have to go out and buy some more. :)
cheers
Strongly recommend you don’t update to v6.3 as import is broken.
It will hang on 100% if any video file is present on your card or folder you are importing.
Also thumbnail will not show up. And i’m sure many other issues.
These are just the issues I found approx 2-3 minutes after update. You’d think a team of 20-50 testers would have found this after a few weeks of testing, but I guess we all know Adobe doesn’t have testers as they’ve ‘automated’ it all away because that is better, cheaper and more reliable as we all can see. Fantastic job Adobe !
This thread indicates that some people are having an issue (and it lists a potential fix), but the issue definitely does not affect all users.
Thanks Laura,
I’m on CC 2015 on subscription in Australia and I updated this morning.
but it updated to 2015.2.1 not 2015.3.
I reverted to the previous version when this issue happened and have held off for the new update.
Unfortunately on Creative Cloud it doesn’t provide the version number when an update is listed.
So trusting that Adobe would distribute the update worldwide I undated, only to find it was the 2015.2.1 update!!
Do you know if there is a delay for updates for Australia?
Thanks, Bernie
This is all good now
The update to 2015.3 has just come through.
Cheers, Bernie
Thanks for keeping us informed on the latest and before Adobe sent out an advisory too.
Happy Shooting
Hi Laura…
HELP!
I just did the upgrade to 2015.3 and now I can no longer import my SONY A7ii ACR (RAW) images.
I need to back up a bit though so you can get the full picture. I used to be able to import photos before I did the upgrade. However, a few days ago I had to take my computer in for some servicing and now I can no longer import. After having read your statement about the new upgrade to .3 I decided to do that with hopes that this would solve my issue. However, it didn’t.
Any thoughts? I’m stumped :(
Many thanks,
Cecile
I would post on lightroomforums.net for suggestions, Cecile, as I don’t know.
When I got to Help and click updates, there are no new updates to install. I followed the link Laura posted and now am running LR 2015.3 – After downloading successfully I went from LR to PS to edit an image. I got a message that Camera Raw needed to be updated and I would find the link in the update section of PS. Nothing was showing, no update. Any advice please? Thank you.
Try logging out of your CC app and logging back in, Barry.
I also had to manually update by using Laura’s link. No notification from Adobe.
Thank you!
Thanks Laura. You are a star!
Thanks for the update and for keeping us informed.
Hi Folks – I never updated LR to 6.2, do I have to install 6.2 before 6.3?
No you don’t, Steve.
Hi Laura, I downloaded LR 6.3 (CC) and for the first time since LR3 I got “cannot read file ” error when converting NEF/RAW to DNG. Not all files
Thank you
Hi Laura,
My update … from 2015.2 to 2015.3 went smoothly (at least I haven’t discovered anything wrong yet). Having the “old” import interface back is welcome. I’m not quite as sanguine and forgiving about Adobe’s behavior as you are. The whole episode was depressing and I hope it doesn’t happen again.
None of the fixes in 6.3 seem to apply to me. I am using 6.1. Should I still update to 6.3? Thanks.
I hope this is not a waste your time kind of question. I have the CC version – and apparently had not ever upgraded from my purchased LR5 version until yesterday. Now, how do I safely remove the former icon/program? from my computer? Is there any risk? Thank you for all of your helpful posts!
Caren, if you have a Mac, you can go into Applications and drag it to the trash. If you have a PC, use Add/Remove Programs to uninstall it.
Thanks! Just updated from 6.1 to 6.3 with your link.
I thought LR 6.3 had the new Dehaze Slider but I don’t see it.
You’re welcome, Craig. I’m not sure where folks are hearing that 6.3 brings dehaze to non-subscribers, but it isn’t true.
Just got your email yesterday that mentioned Adobe admitted crashing issues with LR 6.2 with El Capitan which they claimed were fixed for 6.3.
In my experience, LR still crashes regularly with 6.3 on my Mac. It happens sometimes when I’m scrolling through images in the library or while I’m processing one in the develop module. I never had this issue before 6.2. (or with Yosemite and earlier versions).
When I mentioned this issue on an Adobe forum, they suggested turning off the preference to use your GPU. That helped reduce the frequency of the crashes but hasn’t eliminated them.
I didn’t find the change to the import UI that big a deal, but the deterioration of overall reliability and performance with the last few versions really concerns me. Although my Mac is starting to get older, it has a lot of memory and a powerful processor and used to work better with the older versions, compared to the supposedly streamlined versions Adobe has rewritten. I work with large D800 and D810 files and using LR is getting increasingly frustrating, not smoother. As much as I have enjoyed LR in the past, I may have to more fully explore other options like C1.
Hi Bill,
It might be worth posting on lightroomforums.net to see if you get any more useful advice.
I’m in full agreement with Bill, and have also become frustrated by the deterioration in the performance and reliability of LR.
I upgraded to 6.1 last July because I wanted the much-touted “performance improvements” but found it to be no better and possibly a bit slower than 5.7. On top of that I could barely get 5 minutes use out of it before the next crash or freeze. Also like Bill, I was advised to switch off the GPU but as that was the only thing supposed to be delivering the “performance improvements” I wasn’t impressed. I tried it but it made no difference and within 24 hours I had reverted to 5.7.
I’ve just installed 6.3 and will give it a go but it’ll only be a stop-gap as, like many, I have no intention of ever going down the subscription software route so will be switching to Capture One as soon as I have a camera that Adobe won’t support in the non-subscription version, if not before.
Slideshow function in update 6.3 does not work on Windows 7.
I think they are working on it, Drew.
