Anywhere you see a color selection square in Lightroom, such as for page background color in the Print module,
you can choose a color not only from the color picker that comes up when you click on it,
but also a color from one of your photos.
How? Simply click in the main color selection area (shown above where the eyedropper is), hold the mouse button down, and drag out to your photo, either in the main window or down in the filmstrip.
You can actually select a color from anywhere on your monitor, so if you want a color that is on a web page, for example, position it next to Lightroom, then just click, hold and drag out to the web page.
You will find color options in the Print, Web and Slideshow modules, as well as in the adjustment brush and graduated filter in the Develop module.
Thank you!
I did this by accident weeks ago and could not remember how to recreate it.
Great tip!. I’ve been picking a color by trial and error. I’ll be using this for sure,
Thanks
I love this tip. I cannot tell you how many times I wished that Lightroom had a way to pick color from a photograph. Thanks.
I have a question about changing your virtual copy name in the Meta data. Is there any way to have the name black and white the default for the virtual copy? It seems that I can only change one virtual copy name at a time.
Thanks, Joy! It would be great to be able to change the default, but unfortunately you can’t. Here’s where you can put in a feature request:

Thank you so much for your excellent video Laura! So clearly explained with great examples. As a newcomer to lightroom, you have answered all my questions about this tool!
You’re welcome, Marion!
Thank You!!!!!
This does not work.
It works for me, Steven. I can’t help, though, without more information.
Hi,
I may need to move to photoshop for this but I have a side question relating to this topic. If you go to the web site http://adobe.ly/1PxMtKf and pick the picture of the little girl, the dark bunch of hair on her left bothers me (and the light bunch of hair by her left cheek also bothers me a tad).
So, just experimenting, I draw an area with the adjustment brush and then use your color picker as you suggest to pick the green just a bit to the left of the area that I’ve masked and you can see the result (2nd picture). The main problem is it is too light. I’m also going to have issues with the texture but … as I said, right now I’m in experiment mode. Even the area of the mask that is on top of the original color doesn’t match.
How do I get the color picker (or perhaps the healing brush itself) to match the brightness / darkness of the color. I assume it is matching two of the three components but not the third (is a guess).
When I drew the area with the brush, flow and density were both set to 100. I believe I’m missing something obvious. I’m using lightroom 2015.1.1 All other settings were set to 0. This is the “new” Sony uncompressed raw image — perhaps that is part of the puzzle.
As another experiment, I did the same process on just a flat green area (the small circle in the lower left) and it is also too light. I’m wondering if the word “adjustment” in adjustment brush isn’t the clue here. This isn’t a paint brush but is adjusting / mixing the new layer with the old. But still, the small circle of the same color on top of itself should “disappear” — shouldn’t it?
Thank you for your help,
Perry
I have learnt how to use this tool, but cannot find a way of actually moving it about the screen, as it often covers some other tool, especially using the split toning tool
If you’re just using it to get a color value, Mike, then use one of the color squares in the Slideshow module, as there are more and you can scroll up or down to get it placed on the screen where it won’t block what you’re trying to sample. (You can also resize the LR window if it’s something outside of LR.) I use these all the time!
