Great Lightroom Print Templates — for Free!

Those of you that follow this blog regularly know that I love the Custom Package functionality in Lightroom’s Print module. With this, we can create free-form layouts of multiple photos, and add a bit of text or a logo. You may also know that I don’t emphasize templates and presets in my teaching, because I like to focus on teaching users how to create looks or designs from scratch. However, templates in the output modules and presets in the Develop module can be a great way to save time, and to draw on the creativity and knowledge of others. If you haven’t heard, Jill Levenhagen offers over 100 nicely designed Print module templates for free!  These are sized for screen-based […more]

Improving Performance in Lightroom 4

I would recommend that anyone who is at all frustrated with Lightroom 4 running too slowly  check out this very useful new page from Adobe on steps you can take to improve performance.   Some relate to upgrading your hardware (such as 16 GB of RAM and moving your catalog to a solid state drive), but others relate to the order you make adjustments, clearing History, not making adjustments you don’t need, and more. These suggestions have come from customers, and have been shown to be effective.  (Also do check out Adobe’s page on more traditional ways to optimize Lightroom performance.) It’s all of interest to me, and I don’t want to repeat the article here, but just as an example, […more]

Great Craft & Vision E-Book Sale on Now!

Many of you know that I am a fan of Craft and Vision, which offers high quality photography e-books at amazing prices.   They have just released  Piet Van den Eynde’s new Lightroom 4 Unmasked – A Complete Guide to Adobe Photoshop Lightroom.  I am looking forward to reading it. It is over 300 pages, and retails for $20. Now through Tuesday, November 27, at 11:59 PM, you can get $5 off with the discount code LR4FIVE. Essential Development E-Book and Presets from Sean McCormack – A Great Resource, for an Amazing Price

Imagine being able to purchase a 120 page e-book full of great Lightroom Develop techniques and tips from talented professional photographer and Lightroom expert, Sean McCormack, along with 85 of his Lightroom presets, for only $6. Once again, Craft & Vision has made the unimaginable real, in this new release from Sean: Essential Development: 20 Great Techniques for Lightroom 4. (At this link, scroll to the bottom of the page to get the bundle with presets if you prefer this to just the PDF.) There’s no way Sean can cover the entire Develop module comprehensively in 120 pages, so I don’t consider this to be a substitute for the core training you’ll find in my Lightroom 4: The Fundamentals & […more]

What to Do If Your Photos Really, Truly Are Gone: Turn to Jeffrey Friedl’s Preview Extractor Plugin

Hopefully most of you will never need this post, because you have an effective backup strategy, that backs up both your Lightroom catalog and your image files. I have written about this in the following posts: Avoiding Lightroom-Generated Headaches and Heart Attacks I Would Cry If I Lost the Work I Did Today: How to Back Up Your Lightroom Photo Library But what if you did not read these, and really do lose your image files? (Perhaps you mistakenly thought that you could delete the original image files because you thought that Lightroom had its own copy, or you did not back up your image files and lost them in a crash.)  If you still have your catalog, meaning that […more]
