View Your Focus Points with This Free Lightroom Plugin

With this free Lightroom plugin from Chris Reimold, we can view our in-camera focus points in Lightroom 5!  According to Chris it works for all Nikon DSLR cameras and post-2002 Canon EOS DSLR cameras. It reads your camera focus metadata (focus points, distance, mode, etc), and displays the results in a separate window that opens. Click here to learn more about and download the Lightroom Show Focus Points plugin.  You’ll find that installation and using the plug-in are straightforward, and instructions are given on the site (as well as a full list of cameras supported, in the FAQ.) It works only in Lightroom 5, but a version for Lightroom 4 and earlier versions is in the works. The plugin is [...more]

Lightroom Questions? Here’s Where to Turn for Answers

I am very happy to report that Victoria Bampton’s exceptional reference book, Adobe Lightroom 5 – The Missing FAQ, is now available!  Victoria is a fellow Adobe Community Professional and Adobe Certified Expert in Photoshop Lightroom,  the founder of lightroomforums.net, and one of the most knowledgeable Lightroom experts I know.  She therefore understands what questions Lightroom users have, and has organized her book around these questions. The book is well-written, well-organized, and well-illustrated with hundreds of screenshots and photos, and is full of practical advice about what really matters. You can purchase either the e-book only (includes PDF, Kindle/Mobi & ePub formats), or the e-book together with a black-and-white paperback. I love the e-book format — I can search the [...more]

Great Lightroom Print Templates — for Free!

Those of you that follow this blog regularly know that I love the Custom Package functionality in Lightroom’s Print module. With this, we can create free-form layouts of multiple photos, and add a bit of text or a logo. You may also know that I don’t emphasize templates and presets in my teaching, because I like to focus on teaching users how to create looks or designs from scratch. However, templates in the output modules and presets in the Develop module can be a great way to save time, and to draw on the creativity and knowledge of others. If you haven’t heard, Jill Levenhagen offers over 100 nicely designed Print module templates for free!  These are sized for screen-based [...more]

Improving Performance in Lightroom 4

I would recommend that anyone who is at all frustrated with Lightroom 4 running too slowly  check out this very useful new page from Adobe on steps you can take to improve performance.   Some relate to upgrading your hardware (such as 16 GB of RAM and moving your catalog to a solid state drive), but others relate to the order you make adjustments, clearing History, not making adjustments you don’t need, and more. These suggestions have come from customers, and have been shown to be effective.  (Also do check out Adobe’s page on more traditional ways to optimize Lightroom performance.) It’s all of interest to me, and I don’t want to repeat the article here, but just as an example, [...more]
