For those users who missed my suggestion yesterday to not update to Lightroom 6.2 / CC 2015.2 or who decided to risk it, and have been experiencing crashes, here are my suggestions:
- UPDATE 10/9/15: a 6.2.1 / CC 2015.2.1 update has been released to address crash issue. Update to this, unless you are unhappy with the Import features removed, in which case you can jump to (3) below.
- Try resetting Preferences as you open Lightroom: hold down the Shift and Alt/Opt keys as you open Lightroom, and when the dialog comes up, click on Reset Preferences. When Lightroom opens, in the top menu bar, go to Lightroom (Mac) or Edit (PC) > Preferences, and on the General tab, uncheck “Show Add Photos” screen.
- If this doesn’t resolve your issues, then revert back to Lightroom 6.1.1 until we get an update to 6.2. The instructions below refer to both 6 and CC 2015:
- Uninstall Lightroom 6.2. On Windows, use the Add/Remove Programs feature. On Mac, in Finder go to Applications>Adobe Lightroom, and double-click on the Uninstall file.
- Download Lightroom 6.0 from this page. Find the Lightroom_6_LS_11 file in your Downloads folder, and double-click to open it. Double click on the Install file. When it requires you to sign in with your Adobe ID, it will determine if you are a CC subscriber; if so, it will give you the Dehaze feature.
- Download and install the Lightroom 6.1.1 patch: Windows Mac. These will be setup.zip (Windows) or Setup.dmg (Mac) files. After download, find the file in your Downloads folder, open it, and double-click on the Adobe Patch Installer.

Hi Laura,
Many thanks for the timely advice, I will take it and wait.
Edward.

You can also look at your plug-ins and disable the 6.2. mcm
Thanks for yesterday’s wARning Laura. After reading I did not upgrade and I’m happy I stuck with LR6 considering the hundreds of derogatory remarks I’ve seen. Let’s hope Adobe will listen and do what we the customers want.
Paul
Thank you Laura!
Greetings Laura Shoe,
Thank you for the amazing fast and thorough info on the Lightroom CC 2015.2 / Lightroom 6.2 update. Your the best.
Thanks too for covering both what is and what is not working and the warnings. I made a video tutorial on how to roll back to Lightroom CC 2015.1.1 / 6.1.1 that might interest your readers. See http://bit.ly/rollbacklightroom
Very best regards,

David Marx
Thank you for this, David! It’s unfortunate that we are spending time making blog posts and videos on this, rather than on the wonderful features of Lightroom.
I completely agree. I never thought that I would be making a tutorial on how to undo an advance in Lightroom technology. Its a shame too because there are some features, like the ability to use Dehaze locally with the brush tool, that I think are really neat.
Hopefully this will get patched up soon and then we can get back to talking about the art and craft of photography rather than bugs and crash reports….
Very best wishes to you and thanks again for the warnings,
David
Thanks, Laura. I depend on your info since it’s usually first and always thorough, clear, and sensible. I had not upgraded, but might have blindly, were it not for your newsletter. One other thing that seems to be missing: a clear statement of the version in the Mac GetInfo command. I went there to see what I’m using (I’m on CC Photographer plan), and all I get is a build number. It seems small but a step backward to have to launch the app to find out something so basic.
I took your advice and reset and it “seems” to have solved my problems. I hope that Adobe will fix this 6.2’s issues and we will get a new update but with everything perfect. Thank you.
I’m happy to hear it, Maureen!
Merci beaucoup :-)
“yesterday” is a relative date; I don’t see a date on your article so I can’t know when ‘yesterday’ was. In general I think it would be good practice always to date your articles.
Your articles are valuable by the way.
Hi Tony,
Thank you for the suggestion. You’ll see the article date in the top left, in red.
I missed the warning. No crashes, but there are things in the develop module that don’t seem to work properly. I can’t say I like the new import process. I will stick with the update unless things get worse.
I did not read the warning, but I am having problems and I just rolled back following your advice. What blew up for me was Exporting to JPG. I could select all the options and click the button to start exporting from RAW (Canon 5DSR), and the “Progress Bar” would appear in the upper left hand corner showing the number of photos I had selected to export. It just hung and made no progress. I created zero length files for the first 4 images to export, but then no other signs of progress. Clicking the X to cancel things did not stop the process – it continued to remain hung. This was 100% reproducible. I rolled back to 6.1.1 following your instructions, and export is working just fine again.
Macintosh users can simply downgrade by replacing the Lightroom application folder with a copy from a Time Machine backup from before the upgrade.
I updated to new release… Big mistake, keep crashing… :-(
Thank you very much for the warning and troubleshooting advice . Its much appreciated
Thanks for showing us how to revert to LR 6. Unfortunately, I did not see your post about waiting prior to updating. It cost me the greater part of a day as the update corrupted the catalog. And the new import feature is for five year olds.
The roll-back on my Win10 machine worked well; however, the machine wanted several (unannounced) re-boots, following uninstall (LR 6.2) and install (LR 6.11 and update). With those, all went as suggested. Thanks.
Thank you Laura for your clear links and roll back instructions .I updated and my Mac crashed every time I opened Lightroom.Have reverted to LR6 and my world is fine again.
Hope Adobe gets it right soon
Thanks a ton! Wish I’d seen the warning, so I’m glad you shared the fixes.
Hi
Sadly I did not see this blog prior to clicking on the upgrade. I had Adobe trying to fix the problem for 4hrs yesterday (Australian time) I cannot read any catalogs of photos. I have one for my Google work, one for Real estate and one for personal. Their solution was to create a new user on my Mac book and then operate that way. Also log a call to Apple .
I am now rolling back the installation back to 2015.1
I know that I am not the only person in my organization who was impacted. We operate across Australia.
Thanks for the blog to which I am now a subscriber
Thank you so much! You saved me! You will never know how much I appreciate the help!
Thank you for this! I ended up needing to revert back to 2015.1.1. With 2015.2.1, Lightroom was extremely slow (such as populating the per-folder image count in the Folders window), and always hung on exit (never completely exited).
Thanks for your great tutorials, as well; they’ve been very helpful.
I’d take slow. Mine uploaded as one catalog. Haven’t addressed that yet. Just back from vacation. Not looking forward to it either
Thanks!
Just “downgraded”, or as i see it. Upgraded.
The new import module is a big joke.
Over all, removing features like this.
Not informing about it. Is in my opinion a totally unprofessional behavior from Adobe.
Thanks for the info! Hours wasted yesterday trying to undo the NEW LIGHTROOM FOR DUMMIES. Your advice is timely. (I’m not seeing the De-Haze feature.)
I’ve used LR since v1 and this is the worst thing they’ve done. You’ve got another new subscriber.
Thank you a million times over! I sure hope Adobe comes to there senses, admits they were wrong, apologizes to its current users, and rolls back to the old import module!
I updated – HUGE mistake. I always thought that Adobe updates were for the best but this one is HORRIBLE. Thanks so much for the easy instructions to roll back. I rolled it back on my iMac with no problem. Thanks again.
If I roll back in the way you suggest, or use time machine on my Mac, will I lose all my work I’ve done since I updated.
PS thanks for the great articles you post.
No, you won’t lose your work, Lloyd.
I updated, too, again huge mistake, I didn’t think I was too worried about a new import routine, but now that I’ll seen it in action, I don’t like it. I more don’t like the way that LR has become so prone to fail. Maybe my system is too old. But rolling back to LR 6.1 as I type.
Thanks Laura
Please tell them we need a button in LR Mobile that says Support offline editing of all folders. And one in LR Desktop that says: Synch all folders to Mobile.
Thanks for being so good at what you do.
THE SUPPOSED UPDATE/FIX of 6.2.1 IS UNSTABLE. DO NOT USE.
(this has been my experience on Mac 10.10.5)
Others have been reporting the same thing (see comments at the bottom):
http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/my-lightroom-6-2-unstable
I just bought a new Mac two weeks ago and upgraded to El Capitan. On my old Mac I was still running LR 4 and decided to go CC more for the PS upgrade. But this new version of LR CC is absolutely horrible! I am getting distorted images, presets that show the slider moved but the changes don’t show until you restart LR, even the black “undo” bar at the bottom sticks, and a lot more – like when saving in PS and the images don’t show back up in LR.
I have never downgraded in LR. If i take the above advice, is there anything I need to do to preserve my catalog? I am still in the CC trial, but have six sessions in there.
Thanks.
Hi Patrick,
It can’t hurt to back up your catalog before you follow the instructions in this post.
After the fix my catalog all came in as one big file. Any suggestions? Laura?
I don’t understand what you mean by one big file, Debi.
tired to live with it – just too many funky problems. and that import dialog with the giant check marks – my God, someone should be fired over that! WTH?
thanks for the remedy recipe.
I have recently upgraded my system to El Capitan which my older version of Lightroom didn’t work on. I am currently in a trial of Lightroom CC and having major issues as many above (basically can’t even work on it!). Am I able to ‘roll back to an earlier version even though I am only using the trial version? Need to get some work one asap and currently feel like throwing it all out of the window!!!
Thanks
Yes, Karen, you can roll back.
Thanks, will do that now and hope it fixes some issues x

I was getting terrible response times when trying to “score” a large number of images and I think this may have been because Lightroom wants to keep syncing inspite of the fact that I do not use Lightroom Mobile. I went to the Cloud Preferences/Creative Cloud/Files and turned OFF syncing. This seems to have made a difference. I hope it is not short lived! But why is Lightroom trying to do this syncing when I do not have any collections set up for this purpose?
Peter
Hi Laura,
Can you please tell me what happens when I have already done quite a lot of work in 6.2. I have changed a lot of metadata flags, stars, color labels etc. I have also done some HDRs and Panos. So I now have a catalog updated to 6.2. I understood that this will not work if I roll back to an earlier version. Can you please offer any advice on this?
Peter
You could have rolled back and not lost your work, Peter, but 6.3 is out now so update to this.
Just updated to L/R 6 to 6.1 as per your instructions your letter above and twice the update failed. Difficult to find customer support and would appreciate if you had any suggestions.
Many thanks in advance
Cheers

Roll back I did, but still oh, so slow and still crashes. Is there anything else? What if I uninstall CC and load my free standing version 5? If I save preferences will I have all the stuff I need to use Lightroom 5?
This is far too painful! I just want to manage my photographs.
Thanks for your posts, much appreciated
LAR
Hi Lyle,
I’d recommend posting on lightroomforums.net, if you haven’t already – this just isn’t a good venue for the back and forth needed to diagnose performance problems.
You can use Lightroom 5, but your Lightroom CC catalog is not backwards compatible so you can’t take your editing back to 5.
