The Lightroom team has announced the availability of the official release for Lightroom 5.3. This free update to Lightroom 5 contains bug fixes, new camera support, new lens profiles and a few new Develop shortcuts. When you open Lightroom, you should be prompted to update — download the file and double-click on it to run it. If you aren’t prompted to update, go to Help > Check for Updates. To verify that you have indeed installed the update, in the menu bar go to Help. The last option should say “About Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5.3”.
If you use Photoshop CC, be sure to update to Adobe Camera Raw 8.3 as well.
Lightroom 5.3 Develop Module Tweaks:
To maintain parity with Adobe Camera Raw 8.3, which was also released tonight, there are a few new Develop shortcuts:
For those of you who use Auto White Balance, which analyzes your image data to determine a “best guess” white balance value, the following new shortcuts will come in handy:
- Shift+double-clicking on the Temp or Tint slider label sets each to its Auto White Balance value.
- Shift+double-clicking on the White Balance label sets the Temp and Tint sliders to their Auto White Balance settings and the WB menu to “Auto”. (This is different from the existing behavior of Opt/Alt-clicking or double-clicking on the WB label, which resets the Temp and Tint sliders to their “As Shot” values, and the WB menu to “As Shot”.)
Similarly, if you want Lightroom to set Whites and Blacks automatically to maximize the range of tones from white to black, the following shortcut will be useful. (I still recommend setting Whites and Blacks last, as per this article.)
- Shift+double-clicking to set the auto values for the Whites and Blacks sliders will now take into account current non-default settings, as well as other factors such as the current crop.
Lightroom 5.3 New Camera Support:
Canon EOS M2, Canon PowerShot S120, Casio EX-10, Fujifilm XQ1, Fujifilm X-E2, Nikon 1 AW1, Nikon Coolpix P7800, Nikon Df, Nikon D610, Nikon D5300, Nokia Lumia 1020, Olympus OM-D E-M1, Olympus STYLUS 1, Panasonic DMC-GM1, Pentax K-3, Phase One IQ260, Phase One IQ280, Sony A7 (ILCE-7), Sony A7R (ILCE-7R), Sony DSC-RX10. (* Denotes preliminary support)
Thank you, Adobe, for the Olympus OM-D Em-1 support, as I just bought one!

Hi Laura,
Thanks again for the great tips and explanation of this update! I have a Tokina lens for my Canon 5d mk iii that still isn’t included in Lightroom lens profiles. Do you know where/how to send a request for the Lightroom Devs to add it in the future?
Cheers,
– r
Hi Rachel,
I would post in Adobe’s forum: http://forums.adobe.com/community/lightroom.
Dear Laura,
Thank you for the info. I noted that lens profiles for the new TAMRON 150 – 600mm have been added for the Canon mount. Can I expect an update where profiles for this lens are included for the Nikon mount or will I have to get familiar with Silkypix which is included with the lens? Hope you have time for a brief reply. Thank you.
I’m enjoying your Lightroom 5 tutorials, I like women who knows what they are talking about.
Yours sincerely,
Jannik Schou
Hi Jannik,
I’m not privy to this information — you might want to try posting at http://forums.adobe.com/community/lightroom, as Adobe monitors this forum.
Where and how does one report a bug? I’m still on the current Lightroom version – and my right panel slides if I try to use option+Whites or option+Blacks. Irritating and annoying and I’d like to be able to report it to adobe tech.
Thanks
Here you go, Bohdan: http://forums.adobe.com/community/lightroom. I know they do appreciate when people take the time to let them know of bugs!
Hi Laura,
I have been working through the FAB LR4 series this holiday and am really loving the quality and clarity of your teaching so may I begin with a big thank you.
Now my question – on moving between Before and After in Develop, the Before seems to include the most recent crop when I would have preferred to see the image after as it was imported (ie before the crop and anything else was adjusted). When I go back to the as imported step it often includes the crop but not the other adjustments. Am I doing something wrong?
Many thanks
Janette
Hi Janette,
I would also love “Before” to show the uncropped photo, but it is simply a limitation of Lightroom at this point. The Import step in History generally is “before everything” — unless you did work on your photo before importing it — perhaps in another catalog. You could hit Reset (bottom right) to reset your photo to as you shot it, and then click back and forth in History between your latest step and this to compare before/after. You could also create a virtual copy, reset that and look at them side-by-side in the Library module with Survey View (select both, shortcut N).
Great suggestions – many thanks.
Janette
